Dragons Suffer Series Opening Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Tiffin University baseball team dropped a pair of games on Thursday afternoon, falling 15-2 and then 9-6 in ten innings. The Timberwolves played long ball in game one, and then outlasted the Dragons with three runs in the top of the 10th.

Game One

The Timberwolves opened the game with a bang, scoring five runs on a three run homer and a triple that plated a pair of runs to give Northwood a 5-0 lead. Tiffin responded with a run in their half of the inning, using an Alec McCurry single to right field to make it a 5-1 game.

Both sides added a run in the 2nd, as Northwood used the long ball to score their run to hold a 6-1 advantage. Tiffin crossed the plate on Zach Campbell's single to left center field to make it 6-2.

It was all Northwood for the remainder of the game, scoring three runs in the 4th, 5th, and 7th innings to down Tiffin 15-2.

Game Two

The nightcap was far more competitive, as Tiffin starter Michael Boswell was up to his old tricks. He was opposed by one of the GLIAC's most dominant pitchers, in the form of Ian Dimitrie, holding a 7-0 record.

Neither team did much offensively in the first two innings, but the 3rd frame was full of action. Northwood scored five unearned runs, doing so with a run scoring single, a two run double, and a two run home run. Tiffin countered with a pair of runs in their half of the inning. Zach Campbell picked up a run batted in with a single to center field, and Jack Dennis did the same with a fielder's choice to pull Tiffin to within three runs at 5-3.

Tiffin continued to roll on in the 4th, plating a run on Kyle Vance's run scoring single to left field. Brayden Callihan kept the train moving with a double to left center field that scored two runs to tie the score at 5-5. Northwood handed Tiffin the lead with an error a batter later, as Zach Campbell reached on the defensive miscue.

It looked promising for the Dragons as they held a one run lead headed to the final frame. The promise quickly faded as Northwood cracked a solo home run that cleared the right field wall to tie the score at 6-6.

Both bullpens were excellent in the 8th and 9th innings, but the 10th was the deciding inning. Freshman Michael Ross had the Timberwolves tied in knots, but it all came unwound in his final inning of work as Northwood scored three runs to hold a 9-6 lead. The Dragons had no answer for Northwood's closer, as Lennon Gwizdala earned the win with 3 2/3rd innings of work, while striking out seven in the process.

The Dragons fall to 9-15 overall and 3-7 in the GLIAC. Tiffin will look to turn the tide in their favor tomorrow afternoon, playing a single game on Friday with first pitch coming at 1:00 p.m.
