The Tiffin University baseball team brought out the lumber on Tuesday afternoon, pounding out 18 hits, leading to a season high 14 runs.
Garrett Vernau got the scoring started in the top of the 1st, scoring Elijah Sanabria with a bunt single. John Heckman's ground out in the 2nd inning scored Fernando Nieto to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead. An inning later, Nieto sliced a double down the right field line, scoring Kyle Durham to make it a 3-0 contest.
A pair of runs came home in the 4th inning. Nick Hueneburg doubled home Kurt Barbeau, and Kyle Durham followed the double with a single through the right side of the infield to give TU a 5-0 lead. Tiffin took control of the game in the 5th, adding four runs to the scoreboard. Isaac Perry singled home two runs and Durham followed suit with a two RBI single.
The Dragons were finally held off the board in the 6th, but the Yellow Jackets put a six spot on the board to pull within three runs at 9-6. The Dragons returned fire in the 8th, scoring two more runs. Kyle Lento punched a single to right center field to score Brayden Callihan and John Heckman to give the Dragons an 11-6 lead.
In the 9th and final inning, Tiffin's Alex Hartley collected two RBI's with a single to right center field. The final run for the Dragons came courtesy of Brayden Callihan, singling up the middle to score Seth Bryant.
Tiffin starter Brady Ward tossed three shutout innings, allowing one hit. Marc Deitsch earned the victory in relief, pitching a shutout 4th inning.
Kyle Durham took a break from catching on Tuesday, staking claim to the DH spot with a 4 for 4 performance with three runs batted in. Fernando Nieto finished 3 for 5, cracking a double and a triple while scoring two runs. Elijah Sanabria finished 2 for 2 with a run scored, and Garrett Vernau collected a pair of hits and a run scored.
The win moves the Dragons to 9-12 overall. Tiffin will jump back into GLIAC play, welcoming in Hillsdale College for a weekend four game set.
