Tiffin splits in final two games at Walsh

Tiffin University (9-11, 1-3 G-MAC) split its final two games at Walsh, winning 6-4 before falling 4-2 in a close contest.

Logan Swonger picked up the victory in relief in game one, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing no earned runs while fanning 5. He relieved Gunnar Boehm, who went 4.2 innings and allowed 4 earned runs while also fanning five.

Tiffin led early and then came back late to get the win. In the first inning, Dawson Groch doubled and came home on Tim Orr's single.

After Walsh scored four runs in the third inning, Tiffin tallied three more runs in the fourth. Ben Bach led off with a solo home run. Ty Hatfield then doubled and came home on a double by Ricky Havrilla. Andrew Fairbrother walked and Aidan Grabowski then singled to load the bases. Groch then laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought another run across to tie the score 4-4.

In the sixth inning, Groch reached on a fielder's choice followed by a Griffin Stevens single. Orr then drove Groch home with another single.

Finally in the seventh Cal Brazier singled and Hatfield walked. Havrilla then hit another double to drive in TU's final run.

Havrilla led with two doubles and 2 RBI, while Orr also had two hits for 2 RBI. Bach had two hits with a home run, and Stevens also had two hits.

In the nightcap, Logan Fisher threw well in a no-decision, going 6.1 innings and allowing just 2 hits and 2 earned runs with 6 strikeouts. Zach Johnson took the loss, allowing 2 hits over his inning of relief.

TU had led 2-0 in the game but allowed four runs in the seventh inning.

Tiffin scored in the second inning. Brazier walked and moved up on a passed ball. A groundout to second base moved him to third and Tommy Thamann laid down a sacrifice to the pitcher that got the run home.

TU's second run came in the sixth inning. Bach walked and moved up on a wild pitch. Brazier then singled and Havrilla walked to load the bases. Hilario DeLaPaz then was hit by a pitch to bring a run home.

TU, which had just six singles in the game, could not put a runner in scoring position over the final three innings.

Griffin Stevens had two of the six hits.
