Dragons Fall to Warriors in Extras

Box Score

CINCINNATI, Ohio - After Tiffin baseball and Wayne State each scored two runs in the first two innings on Saturday, the offenses were blanked for the next seven frames, before Wayne State took a 3-2 win on a walk-off in the bottom of the 10th.

Cody Orr got the start on the mound for Tiffin and threw a great game, going 6.2 innings and only giving up the two runs on three hits while striking out a pair of Warriors. Cole Maxwell was impressive in relief as well, going 2.1 innings and giving up just one hit.

Zach Campbell continued his hot start to 2019, going 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. The sophomore is now 12-22 (.545) with two doubles, two triples, and nine RBI in TU's first five games. Freshman Noah Penney also had a good day at the plate for the Dragons with two hits in two at-bats.

The Dragons wasted no time getting on the board, as Brayden Callihan opened the game with a single and was driven in by Campbell's double to deep center field. After an out, Jack Dennis knocked an RBI single to center to score Campbell and put Tiffin up 2-0.

The Warriors got those runs back in the bottom of the second, as runs came across on a fielder's choice and an RBI double.

Tiffin had chances to score over the next seven innings but left two runners on base in both the fourth and eighth innings. Wayne State struggled from the plate as well over that stretch, and didn't have another good scoring chance until the bottom of the ninth when they stranded runners on first and second.

Campbell led off the 10th inning with a walk and raced around to third on a John Heckman single as the Dragons threatened with runners on the corners and nobody out. However, Campbell was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice, and a strikeout and pickoff quickly got three outs and ended the opportunity.

The bottom of the inning did not last long, as Wayne State's Michael MacLean led off with a walk-off home run to left to give the Warriors the 3-2 win.

The Dragons will look to salvage game three of the series tomorrow when the two teams square off again at noon.
