The Tiffin University baseball team rebounded on Wednesday afternoon in Detroit, defeating the Wayne State Warriors in a non-conference contest 6-4.
The Warriors used the long ball to strike first, smacking a homer in the bottom of the 2nd to lead 1-0. Senior Nick Hueneburg kept on swinging, cracking a double to left center field to score Garrett Vernau, tying the score at a run apiece. A two run homer untied the score in the 4th, giving Wayne St. a 3-1 lead
In the 5th, the Warrior defense aided the Dragons' attack. Fernando Nieto crossed the plate on an error to pull the Dragons within a run. Hueneburg kept the two base theme rolling, smacking another two bagger to score Alec McCurry, tying the score at 3-3. The third double of the game for Hueneburg gave the Dragons the lead, as Garrett Vernau motored home to give Tiffin a one run advantage in the 7th.
In the 8th, the Dragons added two insurance runs. Kyle Lento raced to the plate on Vernau's infield single, and Nieto trotted home on Kurt Barbeau's chopper to left field. The Warriors pushed one run home in the 9th, but Patrick Bellinger slammed the door shut, preserving a 6-4 Dragon victory.
Reliever Tim Benner earned the win, tossing a scoreless 6th inning. Nick Hueneburg finished 3 for 5 with three doubles and three runs batted in. Garrett Vernau concluded his day with a 2 for 4 performance, a RBI, and two runs scored.
The win moves TU to 11-15 overall. The Dragons will welcome the Eagles of Ashland University to Heminger Field this weekend for a four game series, with game one on tap for Saturday at 1:00 pm.
