The Tiffin University baseball team lost the fourth and final game of their four game set with the Ashland Eagles 12-6. The Eagles dropped the Dragons in every game, scoring 42 runs in the four game set.
Tiffin sent Tyler Nichols to the mound, and he was greeted rather rudely by the Eagles. Ashland scored a run in the first and three in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Tiffin got two runs back in the second with a Cole McCurry sacrifice fly to score Alex Hartley, and Isaac Perry singled to left center field to plate Seth Bryant, making it 4-2.
Tiffin continued to chip away at the Ashland lead, adding another run in the 5th. With the bases loaded and no outs, Alex Hartley bounced into a 6-4-3 double play that scored Nick Hueneburg. The Dragons tied the game on Eagles' mistakes. Cody Spires reached on a fielder's choice, and a couple of wild pitches later he crossed home to make it a 4-4 game.
After battling back to tie the game, the Dragons then took a nose dive in the bottom of the 7th. Ashland scored 6 runs on 5 hits and two Tiffin errors. This big inning made it a 10-4 contest. Tiffin chalked up another two runs on the board in the top of the 8th with an Elijah Sanabria two out single to score Isaac Perry, and Nick Hueneburg followed that with a triple to deep right center field to score Sanabria to pull the Dragons within four at 10-6.
But Ashland equaled Tiffin's two runs with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. These two runs were the final ones of the contest as Ashland cruised to a 12-6 victory.
Tyler Nichols takes the loss on the mound for Tiffin, throwing 6 innings, giving up 9 hits, 6 runs, all earned, walked 2 and punched out 6. The loss drops Nichols to 1-4 on the season.
At the plate, Nick Hueneburg was 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Nick Calandra went 3 for 5. The Dragons had plenty of opportunities in the game, but left 12 runners stranded on the base paths.
The loss drops Tiffin to 11-18 overall and 5-7 in GLIAC play. Tiffin will attempt to right the ship this weekend as they will travel to Detroit, Michigan to take on the Warriors of Wayne State.
