The Tiffin University baseball team picked up its first win of the season by defeating the Rockhurst University Hawks 3-1, but the Dragons fell in their second game of the day, which turned out to be a pitchers duel, 2-0.
In game one, Cody Spires brought home the winning run to give Dragons the lead in the sixth inning, as Dragons hung on to beat Rockhurst University 3-1 on Saturday.
Garrett Vernau walked to get on base in the sixth. He then went from first to second on a stolen base. Garrett Vernau got on base three times in the game for the Dragons, including a double in the third inning. He scored two runs and had one RBI.
The Dragons relied on Logan Sendelbach to eat up innings en route to the win. Sendelbach allowed one earned run, three hits and four walks while striking out five over seven innings of work. Rockhurst University scored its only run of the game on an RBI single by McCourt in the second inning.
The Dragons entered the game against the University of Illinois Springfield riding high after a hard fought victory in their first game of the season. This game featured All-GLIAC pitcher Tyler Nichols on the hill for the Dragons, and he was opposed by the Prairie Stars' Matt Farrington.
The scoring started in the 3rd inning for Illinois Springfield. An Adam Warda double down the left field line plated a run to put the Dragons down 1-0. The score remained the same until the 8th inning when the Prairie Stars struck again. The run was courtesy of a Gabriel Acevedo triple to right center field.
The Dragon offense struggled to get runners on base, only placing seven runners on base, three via hits and the other four coming from walks. Cody Spires, Noah Heard, and Seth Bryant each collected a hit in game two. Meanwhile on the bump for the Dragons, Nichols chugged along for 7 innings, only surrendering 3 hits, and 1 run. Tyler struck out 2 and handed out two free passes. He was relieved by Kyle Montell who pitched 1 inning, and surrendered a hit and an earned run.
The Dragons end the day with an overall record of 1-1, and will be back on the diamond tomorrow at 10 am against Rockhurst University.
