Tiffin University baseball (17-25) trailed 3-2 after two innings and then scored eight unanswered to secure a 10-3 road non-conference win at conference at conference opponent Malone on Wednesday afternoon.
The Dragons quickly struck for two runs in the first inning as the first four batters reached. Ty Hatfield smacked a triple to right center on the first pitch of the game and Griff Cady followed with a walk. Andrew Fairbrother brought both runners home on a double but was thrown out at third trying for a triple.
An error by shortstop Luke Westerman led to a two-out, two-run home run by Malone to tie the game at two and both runs were unearned. The Pioneers took a 3-2 lead in the second with an RBI double.
Tiffin quickly answered and responded with a run in the third to tie the game. Fairbrother led off with a single and Logan Swonger doubled him home and he was also thrown out at third trying to turn the double into a triple.
Tiffin's pitchers combined to throw seven scoreless innings after Malone scored in each of the first two innings which allowed the offense to go back to work. TU took the lead for good in the fourth with Hatfield's second triple of the game scoring Colin Crisenberry and Michael Patellis.
In the sixth, Malone had runners on second and third with no outs threatening to tie the game or take the lead but TU pitcher Steven Sexton worked out of the jam unscathed. Tiffin blew the game open in the seventh. Swonger and Brayden Clark had RBI singles in the inning, Westerman recorded a sacrifice fly, and Julian Hernandez delivered a two-out RBI single.
The Dragons tacked on another run in the eighth. Crisenberry singled and stole second and scored on an RBI single by Adam Deitschel.
Hatfield, Deitschel, Fairbrother, Swonger, and Hernandez all had two hits while the trio of Hatfield, Fairbrother, and Swonger recorded two RBIs each.
Scotty Adelman (W, 5-5) got the win in relief pitching 1.0 scoreless innings with one strikeout. Brayden Clark got the start on the mound and went 2.0 innings allowing three runs (one earned) with two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
Nick Feasel tossed 2.0 scoreless innings and struck out three. Andrew Baileys also pitched 2.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
