Tiffin University baseball (19-25, 10-16 G-MAC) took both from Hillsdale on Saturday at Heminger Field taking game one 11-1 and game two 4-2. Tiffin's two starters combined for 13 innings and just one earned run. Overall, four Tiffin pitchers held the Hillsdale offense to just seven hits in 15 innings.
Game one was all Dragons. TU struck first for two runs in the second inning as Hilario DeLaPaz and Adam Deitschel led off the inning with bunt singles. Both runners would score on wild pitches for the two runs in the inning.
TU blew it open plating seven in the next two innings combined. In the third, Logan Swonger had an RBI single, Deitschel had a two-run double, and DeLaPaz scored on a sacrifice fly by Colin Crisenberry.
Swonger delivered a two-run single in the fourth to make it 8-0 and with the bases loaded, Swonger scored when Luke Westerman reached on a fielder's choice. The Chargers threatened in the seventh loading the bases with one out but Andrew Baileys induced an ininng ending double play to get out of the jam.
The Dragons were gifted a run rule win in the eighth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Deitschel hit a fly ball and it was dropped by Hillsdale's right fielder allowing the game-winning runs to cross the plate.
Brandon Swope (W, 1-3) picked up his first win of the year tossing 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts. Cameron Foy made his TU debut and pitched 1.0 innings with one strikeout.
Andrew Fairbrother was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate and Swonger had 3 RBI.
In game two, the Chargers struck first for one run in the second inning as they took advantage of a two-out error by Westerman.
Tiffin answered quickly in the second, scoring three to take the lead for good. Westerman scored on an RBI ground out by Crisenberry and Ty Hatfield and Griff Cady followed with back-to-back two-out hits to give the Dragons a 3-1 lead.
Hillsdale came right back and threatened to score in the third. The Chargers loaded the bases with no outs but managed just one run as the Dragons turned an inning ending double play to escape without any further damage.
Both starting pitchers dueled and the game remained 3-2 until the sixth. With one out, Tiffin took advantage of two errors by HC's shortstop on the same play to get an insurance run. Following the error, Westerman reached third base with one but was stranded there and the Dragons took a 4-2 lead into the final inning. TU starter Johnathon Ray retired the Chargers in order in their final at bat.
Ray (W, 3-4) got the win on the mound going the distance throwing 7.0 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) with seven strikeouts.
Cady went 2-for-2 at the plate.
