Dragons begin spring break trip with two wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Tiffin University baseball (5-2) opened their spring break trip with a pair of wins against West Virginia Wesleyan in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday down in Florida.

Game one (W, 3-1)

Scotty Adelman picked up the win on the mound, fueling the Dragons in this one as he pitched a complete game going 7.0 innings while striking out nine. He allowed one run but it was unearned.

The Dragons jumped on the Bobcats for two runs in the first inning as Andrew Fairbrother and Griff Cady recorded back-to-back RBI doubles.

Jack Clancy scored on an Adam Deitschel double in the fifth to make it 3-0. The Bobcats' lone run of the game came in the sixth and took advantage of a throwing error by Scotty Adelman.

Game two (W, 5-4)

Just like game one, Tiffin jumped on the Bobcats early again in this one. Hilario DeLaPaz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the first run of the game and Johnny Baileys scored on a sac fly by Chavis Conceicao to put the Dragons up 2-0 in the second.

The Dragons extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth as Deitschel scored on an RBI double by Fairbrother and Cady singled home both Fairbrother and Ty Hatfield.

The Bobcats' bats came alive in the bottom of the inning and the Dragons had to stave off a fierce comeback attempt. WVWC scored four in the inning with all runs being charged to Tiffin starter Johnathon Ray. With two outs, an error by Fairbrother extended the inning which forced Ray out of the game. In relief, Trent Hedges recorded the final out to end the inning.

Brandon Swope came on in the seventh for a save opportunity and walked the leadoff batter but escaped the inning unscathed to earn his second career save in his first pitching appearance of the season.

Ray went 4.2 innings and struck out five while allowing four runs. He did not walk a batter. Hedges pitched 1.1 innings of relief to get the win and struck out one. Swope earned the save pitching the seventh inning and ended the game by striking out the final WVWC batter.
