Tiffin Routs Clarion to Cap 3-0 Opening Weekend

Box Score

CARY, N.C. - Tiffin baseball kept firing on all cylinders on Sunday, dominating Clarion 14-2 to wrap up their third win in two days.

Clarion got on the board first with a run in the opening frame, but the Dragons tied things up in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly from Nich Green. Tiffin took the lead in the next inning, as Cody Orr knocked a one-out single to left that scored Nick Densmore. Before the inning was over, Zach Campbell (2 RBI) and Green both picked up run-scoring singles to give TU a 5-1 lead.

The two teams were scoreless from the fifth to seventh frames, but the Dragons would explode for nine runs in the top of the eighth to blow the game wide open. All nine runs came with nobody out as the first 10 batters all reached safely, including a pair of two-RBI doubles from Hunter Havekost and Bryce Richey.

Michael Ross got the start on the afternoon and went three innings, giving up one run on five hits with five strikeouts. Alan Meadows was dominant in relief to earn the win, going three innings and striking out six of the 10 batters that he faced. Five more Dragons came in to pitch the final three frames, ending with Hunter Passwaters closing the door on Clarion by inducing a groundout to second base.

Cody Orr continued his stellar start, going 2-3 with an RBI and three walks. In the three games of the opening weekend, Orr went 7-11 (.636) with a double, a triple, five RBI, six runs scored, five walks, and four stolen bases.

Kyle Vance and Zach Campbell also both picked up two more hits and two more RBI for Tiffin, while Nich Green notched three RBI on the day.

Overall during the weekend, the Dragons outscored opponents 32-8, outhit them 41-22, and racked up 12 extra-base hits and 19 walks. The pitching staff was also impressive, sporting a 2.00 ERA with 30 strikeouts and just nine walks.

Tiffin will look to keep it rolling next week when they travel to Florida for their Spring Break trip slate of eight games, starting with a doubleheader on March 1 against the University of the Sciences and Gannon.
