Wehrle, Dragons get split with Senators

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Tiffin University (15-24, 12-10 G-MAC) got a solid outing from Tyler Wehrle in the opener of a Sunday twinbill, winning 9-4 before falling in the nightcap 2-1 against Davis & Elkins.

Wehrle went 6 innings and allowed 5 hits and 3 earned runs. He benefited from a big early lead, as the Dragons led 8-0 after just two innings.

TU got on the board in the first inning. Cody Orr singled and then advanced to third after two ground outs. Orr then caught the catcher sleeping, stealing home as the catcher tossed the ball back to the pitcher as TU led 1-0.

TU broke it wide open in the second inning with 7 runs. Nich Green, Colin BeDell, and Kole Klasic all walked to load the bases. Green then scampered home on a wild pitch. Brayden Callihan roped a double to drive in two more runs and start the train moving.

Orr followed with a single, setting the stage for Kyle Vance. Vance drilled a long home run to left field to tack three more runs on the board. Zach Campbell got in on the fun, singling, stealing second and then taking third on Jack Dennis's single. Green then singled to get Tiffin's final RBI of the inning.

The Senators narrowed the gap to 8-4 with some big hits, but Tiffin kept its composure and added a run in the 6th. Campbell walked and advanced to third on two wild pitches. Dennis then drove him home with a single.

Orr had 3 hits to lead the 12 hit attack, while Callihan had 2 hits with a double for 2 RBI. Vance's HR accounted for 3 RBI, while Dennis and Green also had two hits.

In the nightcap, Gunnar Boehm took the tough loss, as 5 errors in the game hurt the Dragons. Boehm went 6.1 innings and allowed just 3 hits while fanning 5.

The Dragons had a 1-0 lead with a run in the fifth inning. Noah Penney was hit by a pitch, stole second, and advanced to third on Klasic's single. Orr then drove him home with an RBI single.

Things came apart for the Dragons in the 7th inning, when two errors and a wild pitch led to two unearned runs.

The Dragons could not get the offense moving as they did in the opener, totaling just four hits in the game. Orr had two of those hits, while Callihan added a double.

TU mounted one last challenge in the bottom of the ninth inning. Campbell walked, stole second with two outs and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but a fly out to the right field corner ended the game.
