Cold Bats Cost Dragons Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Tiffin University softball team took one of two games on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Clarion University 3-0 in game one and then falling 2-0 in extra innings.

Game One

Kimmy Reynolds was dominant on the mound for Tiffin, working the strikeout pitch early. After punching out five of the first six batters, Reynolds turned to her offense for an early lead. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Dragons sustained a rally to take a 2-0 lead. Gabrielle Hess started the frame with a walk and advanced to second base on a Lindsay Graves sac bunt. Allyson Rock walked to put two on, and a fielders choice loaded the bases. With one out, Brooke Lambert showed her patience by walking to produce Tiffin's first run. A throwing error on Libby Crow's fielders choice allowed the Dragons to take a 2-0 lead.

In the 3rd, Reynolds fanned two more batters and carried a no-hitter into the 5th inning. A one out single put an end to the no-hit bid, and placed two Golden Eagles aboard. Another strikeout ended the threat and preserved a 2-0 Tiffin lead.

Alayna Lytle led off the 6th with a single and two wild pitches moved her to third base. Kate-Lynn Urgo punched a single through the left side of the infield to make it a 3-0 lead for the Dragons.

Kimmy kept Clarion off the board, going the distance for her sixth win of the season. Reynolds allowed one hit, three walks, and struck out a dozen.

Game Two

If you like offense, game two wasn't for you. Through five innings of play, the two teams combined for three hits. Savannah Chalfant was masterful for Tiffin on the mound, pitching four hitless and scoreless innings. Tiffany Snell came on in relief, throwing another four innings, allowing only one hit, and unfortunately a pair of unearned runs.

In the 8th inning, Clarion took advantage of three Tiffin errors to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, the Dragons had the tying run at third base with one out, but back to back fly outs ended the comeback.

Snell was the tough luck loser for Tiffin, allowing the two unearned runs in the 8th.

The Dragons move to 14-13 overall and will be back in action this weekend.
