The Tiffin University softball team dominated on Saturday afternoon and evening, sweeping in shutout fashion. The Dragons bashed their way to a 8-0 win in five innings over Glenville State in game one, and then used the left arm of Kelsey Yaratch to blank Salem International 2-0.
Game One
In game one, the Dragons used their bats and team speed to take control. In the 3rd inning, Tiffin began their attack. Alayna Lytle walked, and moved to second thanks to Emily Pender's sacrifice bunt. Lytle then stole third, and trotted home on Cassandra Brown's ringing single to give TU a 1-0 lead. Jamie Sevenish walked to put runners at first and second, and then TU committed yet another theft, pulling off a double steal. Jena King delivered another hit, scoring Brown, making it 2-0. King then stole second, and the aggression paid off, as Allyson Rock dumped a single into the outfield, scoring both Sevenish and King to put the Dragons ahead 4-0.
The Dragons continued to play add on in the 4th. Libby Crow singled to lead off the inning and kept a certain trend alive, swiping second base. Crow came racing home on an RBI single from Michelle Poe. The Dragons made it an early afternoon in the 5th.
Tiffin, leading 5-0, led off the inning with a single from Cassandra Brown, and advanced into scoring position with yet another stolen base. Brown was chased home with a slicing double off the bat of Jamie Sevenish to give the Dragons a 6-0 lead. Jena King pushed another run home with a single, and advanced to second on a groundout. King then swiped the 7th bag of the game for the Dragons. The contest came to an end on an Amanda Rock single, scoring King.
On the mound, Tiffany Snell pitched five shutout innings, surrendering four hits, while punching out three. The win is the first of Snell's collegiate career. At the plate, Cassandra Brown, Jamie Sevensih, and Jena King each collected two hits. King added two RBI's, and Allyson Rock went 1 for 3 with two runs batted in.
Game Two
After the offensive outburst in game one, the Dragons found themselves in a pitcher's duel in game two. Tiffin southpaw Kelsey Yaratch was sent to the hill to face the Tigers of Salem International, and she didn't disappoint.
Kelsey baffled Salem, striking out six batters before surrendering the first hit of the game in the 4th. Her offense was held off the board through three innings, but in the top of the 4th, the Dragons strung four hits together, scoring the games only two runs. A sacrifice fly by Allyson Rock scored Jamie Sevenish, and a Michelle Poe single drove home the final tally of the contest, scoring Jena King.
Yaratch continued to deal, retiring the final nine batters of the game to earn her second victory of the season. Kelsey went the distance, walking one batter, while handing 10 K's to the opposition. Allyson Rock finished the game 2 for 2 with a run batted in.
The sweep moves the Dragons to 8-6 overall.
