The Tiffin University women's basketball team pulled out a hard fought win on Thursday evening, defeating the Wayne State Warriors 64-58. The Dragons trailed by as much as seven points, but were able to keep it close and make their move late.
In the 1st quarter, the Dragons held a 8-4 lead before the Warriors made a small 5-0 run to lead 9-8. The Dragons controlled the pace for the remainder of the quarter, with Tiffin leading 20-16 after a quarter of play.
Holding a four point advantage, the Dragons scuffled in the 2nd quarter, surrendering 19 points to the Warriors, including a 9-0 run to start the 2nd. The Dragons collected nine points in the quarter, and trailed 35-29 at the break.
Halftime saw Bre Nauman leading the Dragons in scoring with 10 points. Nauman also collected seven boards for the Dragons. Ali Schirmer tossed in six points, but her impact would be felt later in the contest.
The 3rd quarter was the Ali Schirmer show, with the youngster pouring in 10 points, including two made three point buckets to aid the Dragon comeback. Tiffin's deficit reached its peak with 6:13 left in the 3rd, but it was quickly cut to a two point deficit with a Jessica Farr layup and a Schirmer three. The Dragons took the lead with 91 seconds left in the 3rd, using a Deidre McKay layup to lead 48-46.
Tiffin continued to push the Warriors further and further into the rearview mirror, with Schirmer striking again from deep to bump the TU advantage to nine points. Bre Nauman got into the action as well for the Dragons, swishing a three point jumper to put Wayne State down 11. The Warriors refused to go away, collecting eight quick points to pull within three, but Tiffin sealed the deal at the free throw stripe, collecting a 64-58 home victory.
The Dragons were led in scoring by Bre Nauman and Ali Schirmer with 20 points each. Nauman collected another double-double with 14 rebounds for Tiffin. Schirmer was 5-8 from three and added six boards.
The win moves the Dragons to 6-15 overall and 4-12 in GLIAC play.
