The Tiffin University men's basketball team fought hard on Thursday night, overcoming a deficit, and ultimately using excellent free throw shooting down the stretch to defeat the Wayne State Warriors 61-55.
In the 1st half, neither team could find nylon as the shots just wouldn't fall. Wayne State took control and throughout the half held a slim lead before the Warriors used a 5-0 run to boost their lead to nine points at 27-18. At the half, the Dragons were shooting 29% from the floor, 17% from three, and 60% from the free throw line. The Dragon defense held the Warriors to 35% shooting from the floor, and their perimeter defense held WSU to 1 of 5 shooting from beyond the arc. Alex Brown led the Dragons in the scoring department with 9 points on 3-8 shooting.
The Dragons used a 11-2 run to start the 2nd half, tying the score at 29-29. The Warriors and Dragons continued to trade body blows, with four lead changes throughout the contest. The Warriors made their final push halfway through the 2nd half, regaining a three point advantage. That lead evaporated just thirteen seconds later with a Terrell Mabins three point bucket. The Dragons' lead was in jeopardy around the nine minute mark, when Wayne St. tied the score at 39-39. TU forged ahead, and used a 2nd half 13 of 16 performance from the charity stripe to put the Warriors away.
The Dragons featured five players in double figures, but were led by Terrell Mabins with 13 points. Alex Brown pitched in 11 points, Jonathan Sutherlin also added 11 points and snagged 8 rebounds. Juwan Johnson netted 10 points, and Chrisean Marsden scored 10, all coming in the 2nd half.
The win moves the Dragons to 7-9 overall and 3-6 in GLIAC play.
