The Tiffin University women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season, beating the Lewis University Flyers 2-1.
The Dragons and Flyers not only battled each other, but played through 90 degree plus temperatures. Tiffin struck first in the seventh minute. Olivia Haskin hit Taylor Lewis in stride, and Lewis flipped the ball over the keeper's head to put the Dragons up 1-0.
While the Tiffin defense was keeping the Flyers grounded, Tiffin found the back of the net for the second time. In the 28th minute, Svetlana Gudenkova entered the box with the ball, and was tackled from behind. This resulted in a yellow card for Lewis and a penalty kick for Gudenkova. She didn't disappoint, slicing the ball past the goalkeeper to give TU a 2-0 advantage.
The Dragon defense was put to the test in the 2nd half, as the Flyers went on the offensive. Lewis cracked the board in the 60th minute on a corner kick that bounced off a Dragon defender and deflected off the Flyers' Annalisa Lappo and past Samantha Ortenzi to pull Lewis to within a goal at 2-1.
From that point forward, the Tiffin defense bent, but didn't break as Lewis out shot the Dragons 22-15, and in shots on goal with 12 of the 22 being on goal. Samantha Ortenzi earns the win in goal for the Dragons, saving 10 of the 12 shots she faced.
Tiffin moves to 1-1-1 overall, and will be back in action on September 18, as they head north to open GLIAC play, taking on Ferris State in Big Rapids, Michigan at 4:00 p.m.
