The Tiffin University softball team swept the Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday, hurling back to back shutouts, 4-0 and 7-0. Tiffin only surrendered three hits in the two games.
Kimmy Reynolds put her 8-3 record on the line in game one, and left little doubt about that record. Reynolds went the distance and flirted with a no hitter.
Reynolds received run support before stepping to the mound. Cassandra Brown led off the game with a double down the left field line. Jena King chased Brown home with a single back up the box to make it 1-0.
The Dragons added another run in the 3rd, as Cassandra Brown reached on a fielders choice, and moved to second on Kristin Prokopakis's bunt single. Then Jena King lined a single back up the middle to collect her second rib eye of the game to give Tiffin a 2-0 advantage.
The final two runs came in the 5th. After an Allyson Rock single and a Kailee Flowers walk put two on with one out, Tiffin took advantage of Ferris's defensive mistake. Samantha Ringwalt bounced a ball to second base which was booted to score both runners making it 4-0.
Kimmy Reynolds took her no hit bid to the 6th inning, and with two down in the inning, a hard hit line drive was dropped at third base in what was scored a single. That hit was the first and final for Ferris as Reynolds went 7 innings, walked 2 and punched out 9. The win pushes her record to 9-3. At the plate, Jena King was 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs.
Sarah Brown took to the mound in game two, and the Bulldogs, more times than not, were left standing at the plate with a K hanging from their collar.
Tiffin started the scoring in the 2nd, and made sure it was a big inning. Delaney Mixer singled and Madison Yanek walked to put a pair on. Tamara Link then laced a double over the center fielder's head to score both. With two down, Kailee Flowers drew a base on balls to put two on, and Cassandra Brown chased both runners home with a double to left center field. The final run was courtesy of Jena King's RBI single to left field to make it 5-0.
The Dragons added their final two runs in the 4th. Kaitlin Gruenewald singled with one down, and Jena King followed that with a single of her own, advancing to second on the throw to third by Ferris. Delaney Mixer then slapped a single to right field to score both, giving Tiffin a commanding 7-0 lead.
Sarah Brown gave up her lone hit in the first inning, and after that she became very stingy. Sarah pitched 6 innings, did not walk a batter, and fanned 12. At the plate, Tiffin banged out 13 hits. Cassandra Brown, Kaitlin Gruenewald, Jena King, Delaney Mixer, and Madison Yanek all had two hits. Brown and Mixer each collected two RBIs.
Tiffin now stands at 19-11 overall and 10-2 in GLIAC play. They will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Grand Valley State Lakers.
