The Tiffin University Dragons fell behind in the 1st period on Friday afternoon, but fought back and eventually struck gold in the 2nd overtime period to defeat the Malone University Pioneers 3-2.
In the 1st period, the Pioneers found the net first, scoring just five minutes into the contest. Tiffin responded in the 43rd minute, as Taylor Lewis unleashed a booming kick from 40 yards out to find the left post and the net. At the half, Malone led in shots 12-6 and in corner kicks 2-1. Dragon keeper Samantha Ortenzi recorded three saves in the half.
The 2nd half was a tense and tight affair, with the Dragons taking a 2-1 lead in the 47th minute. Taylor Lewis, already with a goal in the game, found Adrianna Currie on a beautiful through ball, and Currie did the rest. Malone tied the game in the 68th minute, scoring off a rebound, and that meant free soccer.
With neither team finding the net in the first ten minute OT, the teams moved on to the second overtime period. In that period, Tiffin put the finishing touches on their 3rd win of the season. Svetlana Gudenkova took a pass and delivered a perfect touch shot over the outstretched arms of the Pioneer keeper to send the Dragon faithful home happy with a 3-2 victory.
Offensively for Tiffin, Lewis, Currie, and Gudenkova all collected goals, and Lewis also added an assist. Samantha Ortenzi earned the win in goal, making 8 saves, as she was under fire all game long.
The win moves TU to 3-9-2 overall and 1-8-1 in GLIAC play. The Dragons will be back in action Sunday, as they host Walsh for Senior Day at 3:00 p.m..
