TIFFIN, Ohio - Junior Cody Spires had three hits as the Tiffin University baseball team (15-29, 14-13 GLIAC) beat #37 Wayne State (31-13, 19-9 GLIAC) 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at Heminger Field.
Wayne State jumped on Tiffin for two runs in the first inning. In the bottom of the inning, sophomore Garrett Vernau singled. With two outs, Spires walloped a triple to right center field that scored Vernau. Sophomore Cole McCurry singled up the middle to score Spires.
In the fifth inning, Vernau doubled with two outs. Junior Nick Calandra doubled to left field to score Vernau. Spires singled to move Calandra to third. Calandra would score on a wild pitch.
The Warriors threatened in the seventh with runners at the corners and one out. The Dragons turned a double play to end the inning. In the ninth, WSU scored a run and had runners at the corners with two outs. TU got a strikeout to get the win.
For Tiffin, McCurry and Vernau had two hits each. Freshman Kyle Montell (2-1) gave up two hits, two runs, walked three and struck out two in six innings. Freshman Dan Sexton gave up three hits, one run which was unearned, walked two and struck out four in three innings for his first save.
For Wayne State, Eric Cunningham and Jimmy Jackson had two hits each. Brandyn Hall (3-2) gave up nine hits, four runs, walked two and struck out two in 4.7 innings.
