HILLSDALE, Mich. - Sophomore Tyler Nichols extended his scoreless streak as the Tiffin University baseball team (13-29, 12-13 GLIAC) split with Hillsdale (15-29, 13-15 GLIAC), Saturday afternoon at Simpson Field. TU won the first game 5-0 and lost the second 4-2.
In the opener, in the second inning, freshman Isaac Perry singled and was driven home by a double from freshman Kyle Lento. Following a failed pick off, sophomore Elijah Sanabria singled to score Lento to make it 2-0. Tiffin would add three more insurance runs.
For Tiffin, Perry had three hits and scored two runs while Lento had two hits and scored twice. Nichols (3-1) threw a three-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts. He has now gone 15.3 innings without giving up a run and 37.3 innings without surrendering an earned run.
For Hillsdale, Matthew Reck (3-4) gave up nine hits, five runs, two earned, walked two and struck out one in seven innings.
In the nightcap, the Dragons struck in the first inning. Sophomore Garrett Vernau and junior Nick Calandra knocked out singles. Vernau stole third and scored on a bad throw which left Calandra at third. He would score on a single by sophomore Cole McCurry.
Hillsdale scored one in the bottom of the first. The Chargers used four hits to score three in the third inning. In the seventh inning, Sanabria and Vernau got hit by a pitch and walked, respectively. HC then got three strikeouts to hold on.
For Tiffin, sophomore Logan Sendelbach (2-8) gave up seven hits, four runs, three earned, walked two and struck out four in six innings.
For Hillsdale, Tad Sobieszczans had two hits. Jake Lee (5-2) gave up four hits, two runs, both earned, walked three and struck out two in six innings. Dan Pochmara (5) walked one and struck out three in one inning.
Tiffin remains on the road, Sunday, April 27, taking on Hillsdale. The game is scheduled to start at noon.
