DETROIT - Junior Cody Spires had three hits as the Tiffin University baseball team (12-28, 11-12 GLIAC) lost 3-2 and 3-2 to Wayne State (29-11, 17-7 GLIAC), Wednesday afternoon at WSU Baseball Field.
In the opener, in the third inning, freshman Isaac Perry was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Kyle Durham doubled down the left field line to score Perry.
In the fourth inning, sophomore Garrett Vernau singled and moved to second on a ground out. He would score on a single from Spires. Wayne State scored twice in the fourth to tie it up, and then got a run in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
For Tiffin, Spires had two hits. Senior Joe Perretta (1-4) gave up a hit with bases loaded in the seventh for the loss. Freshman Dan Sexton gave up eight hits, three runs and struck out six in six innings.
For Wayne State, Jeff Sorenson (1-0) gave up one hit, walked three and struck out one in two innings.
In the nightcap, the Dragons started going with two outs as sophomore Elijah Sanabria and Vernau singled. Following a wild pitch, an error allowed both runners to score. The Warriors scored three runs over the last two innings to steal the win.
For Tiffin, Sanabria had two hits. Freshman Justin Bailey (1-3) faced one batter in the seventh for the loss.
For Wayne State, Jeremy Carrell had two hits. Clayton Ruch (3-2) struck out one in the seventh inning for the win.
Tiffin remains on the road, Saturday, April 26, taking on Hillsdale. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
