TIFFIN, Ohio - Strong pitching was the story as the Tiffin University baseball team (12-26, 11-10 GLIAC) swept Northwood (12-22, 4-16 GLIAC)10-0 and 8-3, Friday at Heminger Field.
In the opener, sophomore Jordan Widman singled and sophomore Garrett Vernau was hit by a pitch. Junior Cody Spires ripped a triple to score Widman and Vernau. Spires would score on an error.
Freshman Kyle Lento was hit by a pitch and stole second. Freshman Isaac Perry hit a grounder that was misplayed and put Lento on third. Freshman Devon Fisk singled to score Lento. That was all Tiffin needed to seal the game.
For Tiffin, Spires had a triple and home run, scored two runs and drove in four runs, junior Nick Calandra drove in three runs and Vernau had two hits and scored three runs. Sophomore Tyler Nichols (2-1) threw a five-hitter with three strikeouts for the complete game.
For Northwood, Jason Wimbury (0-6) gave up three hits, four runs with two earned in one inning.
In the nightcap, Northwood had a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth. Spires walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Lento singled to put runners at the corners. Perry walked to load the bases.
Following the second out, Fisk and Widman drew walks that scored Spires and Lento. Vernau singled through the left side to score Perry. Calandra then dropped in a single to right field that scored Widman and Fisk. The Dragons would hold the Timberwolves to two hits and one run the rest of the way.
For Tiffin, sophomore Logan Sendelbach (2-7) gave up five hits, three runs, one earned, walked one and struck out four in six innings.
For Northwood, Larsen Cronkright had three hits. Alex Lewandowski (2-2) gave up four hits, six runs, five earned, walked five and struck out one in 3.7 innings.
