TIFFIN, Ohio - Sophomore Garrett Vernau stole three bases as the Tiffin University baseball team (9-24, 8-8 GLIAC) lost 4-3 and 5-1 to Lake Erie (17-14, 11-7 GLIAC), Saturday afternoon at Braggs Field.
In the opener, in the second inning, sophomore Cole McCurry singled and junior Cody Spires reached on an error. Eventually, freshman Kyle Durham singled to drive in both runners. Lake Erie scored twice in the third to tie the game up.
In the fifth inning, Durham walked and sophomore Jordan Widman reached on an error. A fielder's choice put Durham at third and Vernau at first. Junior Nick Calandra grounded out to push Durham across the base.
The Storm scored a run in the sixth to tie it at 3-3. In the seventh, LEC used two hits and an error to score the winning run.
For Tiffin, McCurry had two hits, Durham drove in two runs and Vernau stole two bases. Sophomore Logan Sendelbach (1-7) gave up eight hits, four runs, three earned and struck out two in 6.7 innings.
For LEC, Lucas Raley had two hits. D.J. Stastny (4-0) walked one batter in one inning for the win.
In the night cap, Lake Erie used three hits and two errors to score four runs in the third. The Storm would add a run in the fifth.
In the seventh, sophomore Kirk Olesick singled and was replaced by senior Connor Wendt. Sophomore Elijah Sanabria drew a walk to put two on. Vernau singled to score Wendt and break up the shutout.
For Tiffin, sophomore Tyler Nichols (1-1) gave up six hits, four runs, none of them earned and struck out three in four innings.
For LEC, Garrett Emling had three hits. Brian Kilway (3-2) gave up two hits, one run, walked four and struck out five in seven innings.
Tiffin is on the road, Sunday, April 13, taking on Lake Erie. The game is scheduled to start at noon.
