AVON, Ohio - Seniors Kevin Kline and Joe Perretta scattered eight hits as the Tiffin University baseball team (3-16, 2-0 GLIAC) swept Saginaw Valley State (3-9, 0-2 GLIAC) 2-0 and 5-1, Friday at All Pro Freight Stadium.
In the opening game, Tiffin struck in the third inning. With two outs, freshman Devon Fisk and sophomore Cole McCurry were hit by pitches. Following a wild pitch, sophomore Kirk Olesick singled to score Fisk and McCurry.
Saginaw Valley State attempted a comeback by getting their leadoff hitter on in the seventh. The Dragons turned a double play and got a pop up to get the win.
For Tiffin, sophomore Garrett Vernau stole two bases. Perretta (1-2) threw a six hitter with three strikeouts for the complete game shutout.
For SVSU, Luke Valutis had two hits. Dylan Wisniewski (0-2) gave up two hits, two runs, walked two and struck out five in five innings.
In the nightcap, in the fourth inning, Olesick was hit by a pitch and junior Nick Calandra and freshman Kyle Durham drew walks. Junior Cody Spires doubled to score Olesick and Calandra.
In the fifth inning, the Cardinals used a hit and an error to score a run. TU would score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the game. The highlight was freshman Kyle Lento crushing a triple to drive in two runs.
For Tiffin, Spires had two hits and drove in two runs and Vernau stole two bases. He has stolen at least one base in each of the last four games. Kline (1-2) gave up two hits, one run which was unearned and struck out five in seven innings.
For SVSU, Andrew Geese (1-2) gave up two hits, two runs, walked four and struck out 12 in five innings.
Tiffin will take on Saginaw Valley State, Saturday, March 22 at Toledo Central Catholic High School. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
