AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Sophomore Garrett Vernau had four hits and stole three bases as the Tiffin University baseball team (1-11) dropped a double header, 3-1 and 5-1 to Seton Hill (6-5), Monday at Lake Myrtle Park.
In the opener, in the fourth inning, Vernau singled and stole second. Following a passed ball, sophomore Kirk Olesick hit a sacrifice fly to score Vernau.
In the fifth inning, Seton Hill used three hits and an error to score three runs. The Griffins then set Tiffin down 1-2-3 in the sixth and seventh innings to get the win.
For Tiffin, Vernau had two hits and freshman Isaac Perry recorded five assists. Senior Joe Perretta (0-2) gave up six hits, three runs, two earned, walked one and struck out one in five innings.
For Seton Hill, Taylor Schmidt had a double and drove in two runs. Brett Sullivan (3-1) gave up two hits, one run which was unearned, walked one and struck out seven for the complete game.
In the nightcap, the Dragons drew first blood again. In the fourth, Olesick singled and was forced out at second on a fielder's choice by junior Cody Spires. Spires moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and would score on a single from freshman Kyle Durham.
SH scored four in the fifth and one in the seventh to take a four run lead. TU started a rally putting two on with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Seton Hill would get a fly out and a double play to get the win.
For Tiffin, Durham, freshman Kyle Lento and Vernau had two hits each. Freshman Patrick Bellinger (0-1) gave up three hits, three runs and struck out two in 4.3 innings.
For Seton Hill, Brendan Constantino had two hits and drove in three runs. Jordan Fuller (1-1) went the distance giving up seven hits, one run, walked two and struck out three.
Tiffin will take on Wayne State (Neb.), Wednesday, March 12, in Auburndale, Fla. The game is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
