FINDLAY, Ohio - Free throw shooting was the Achilles heel as the Tiffin University men's basketball team (8-13, 4-12 GLIAC) lost 71-64 to Findlay (17-4, 13-4 GLIAC), Saturday afternoon at Croy Gym.
Findlay led for 17 minutes in the first half, yet the lead was between two and four points almost the entire time. Junior Kelvin Toma nailed a 3-pointer from his backyard in Michigan. That gave Tiffin a 25-24 lead with 4:14 to go.
After exchanging leads, Toma hit a driving layup to make it 29-28, Dragons at the 1:10 mark. The Oilers hit a jumper with 26 seconds left to lead by one at the half.
In the second half, TU came out running. Toma hit a short turnaround jumper to close an 11-5 run. That made it 40-35, Tiffin at the 14:33 mark.
UF went on a 17-5 run to lead 52-45 with 8:12 to go. The Dragons stayed close and were down just three with 2:30 to go. That was as close as they could get.
TU shot 52% from the floor while holding Findlay to 39.3%. The difference in the game was free throws. The Oilers got to the line 16 times in the second half to just seven for Tiffin. 11 of their last 16 points were from the line.
For Tiffin, junior Ashton Khan had 22 points and was 10-of-12 from the floor while Toma scored 15 points with three triples. Sophomore Khaleal McCormick scored 11 points and had two steals. Senior Joe Graessle has now scored 1445 career points in GLIAC play, third best all-time.
For Findlay, Greg Kahlig had 24 points and Jake Heagen scored 15.
