This one had to feel good.
Coming off a four-game losing streak, Tiffin University (6-11, 3-10 GLIAC) travelled to Ashland, where they had never won and had only one career victory against the Eagles (during the 2011 season). But the Dragons bucked history by playing solidly in all phases of the game, hit big shots late and then hit key free throws to clip the Eagles 83-80.
TU once again came out of the gate slowly, falling behind 19-8 at the 14:00 mark. But the Dragons rebounded to finish the half on a 32-19 run and take a 40-38 lead into the intermission.
The game, which featured 7 ties and 9 lead changes, came down to the closing minutes. Tied 71-71 with 5:00 left, the Eagles finally retook the lead 77-76 with just 34 seconds left. Karli Mast, however, buried a huge three pointer in response to put TU up by a bucket with 20 seconds left.
Ashland cut the lead to one point on a layup with 8 seconds left, but Jordan Fraley and Mast sank four free throws to put the game away.
TU won the rebounding battle 38-36, including 13 big offensive rebounds that led to a 16-7 edge in second-chance points. TU also held a solid lead in bench scoring (24-13). They controlled the ball well, committing only 11 turnovers.
Mast finished with 23 points, while Jillian Adams led the post players with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Fraley was joined by Katie Miller with 10 points apiece, while Bre Nauman had 8 points and 9 rebounds. Kaylee Patton also had 8 points.
