UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Freshman Cole McCurry scored twice and pushed his hit-by-a-pitch streak to three games as the Tiffin University baseball team (19-29, 13-19 GLIAC) lost 5-3 and 2-0 to Saginaw Valley State (16-21, 14-13 GLIAC), Saturday afternoon at the SVSU Sports Complex.
In game one, in the second inning, McCurry reached on a fielder's choice. He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on freshman Garrett Vernau's single to right field. In the third inning, senior Ryan Williams singled, stole second and scored off a double by sophomore Nick Hueneburg.
Saginaw Valley State scored twice in the third to tie it up. The Cardinals then scored three in the fifth to take the lead. The Dragons added a run in the seventh.
For Tiffin, McCurry scored two runs and Vernau drove in two runs. Junior Joe Perretta (2-5) gave up seven hits, five runs, four earned, walked two and struck out one in four innings.
For Saginaw Valley State, Chet LaFave and Brad Schalk had two hits each. Mike Schaaf gave up three hits, three runs, walked four and struck out six in seven innings.
In the nightcap, SVSU scored twice in the third. In the fifth inning, TU had runners at first and second with no outs. Saginaw Valley State turned a double play and got a strikeout to end the threat.
For Tiffin, senior Roger Christensen had two hits. Senior Eric Klepper (2-5) gave up three hits, two runs, walked one and struck out five in six innings.
For Saginaw Valley State, Schalk had two hits. Dylan Wisniewski (3-1) threw a four-hitter with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings.
Tiffin closes the regular season, May 5 at Saginaw Valley State. The game is scheduled to start at noon.
