Tiffin University (15-15, 9-6 GLIAC) spotted Malone an 8-0 lead after 5 innings but nearly pulled off the comeback, falling a run short in a 10-9 loss.
The Dragons could not stifle the Pioneers' bats early, as Brent Faber lasted just 3.2 innings and allowed 5 earned runs. But TU responded with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning to narrow the gap to 8-6.
Malone chipped a couple more runs off the Dragons bullpen, which saw four pitchers combine to allow 3 earned runs over the final 5.1 innings. Malone added two runs in the 8th inning but again the Dragons responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 10-9 heading to the ninth inning.
TU managed to get a runner in scoring position in the ninth with just one out but a line out and a pop up ended the Dragons' chances.
Roger Christensen had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBI, while Garrett Vernau also had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBI. Ryan Williams had a double for 2 RBI, and Nick Calandra also had 2 hits.
