Tiffin Wrestles Two Wins From Pioneers

TIFFIN, Ohio - Seniors Erik Klepper and Nick Rodesky got complete games as the Tiffin University baseball team (15-14, 9-5 GLIAC) swept Malone (9-18, 2-12 GLIAC) 2-1 and 8-1, Saturday afternoon at Heminger Field. Tiffin has won seven of their last eight games.

In game one, Malone scored in the first inning to take the early lead. In the third, senior Colin Sallee was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. Freshman Cole McCurry singled to left center field to score Sallee.

In the seventh, senior Jordan Stum singled and was replaced on the bases by senior Darrell Wynkoop. Following a bunt, walks to Sallee and senior Brock Mitchell loaded the bases. McCurry hit a fielder's choice to score Wynkoop for the win.

For Tiffin, McCurry drove in both runs. Rodesky (3-1) gave up two hits, one run, walked four and struck out six in seven innings.

For Malone, Alex Haines (2-3) gave up four hits, two runs, one earned, walked four and struck out five in 6.3 innings.

In the nightcap, in the second inning, sophomore Nick Calandra walked and moved to second on a balk. A single by junior Mario Rodriguez put runners on the corners. Sallee singled to score Calandra. Two ground balls would eventually score Rodriguez.

The Pioneers would score one in the third inning to close the gap to 2-1. Two MU errors would allow the Dragons to get the run back in the bottom of the third. In the fourth, TU used four hits and two errors to score four runs and break the game open.

For Tiffin, Sallee had two hits. McCurry was hit by a pitch twice to push his total to 18 on the season. That broke the school record of 17 set by Ty Blake in 2009. Klepper (2-3) gave up four hits, one run, walked one and struck out six in seven innings.

For Malone, Bob Suitca had two hits. Tyler Whitlach (2-3) gave up seven hits, eight runs, three earned, walked one and struck out four in five innings.
