ALLENDALE, Mich. - Senior David Blalock and junior Joe Perretta threw complete games as the Tiffin University baseball team (13-13, 7-4 GLIAC) swept Grand Valley State (13-10, 7-3 GLIAC), 3-2 and 8-3, Wednesday afternoon at Laker Baseball Field.
In the first inning of game one, freshman Cole McCurry reached on an error and moved to second on a single by senior Roger Christensen. Following a sacrifice bunt, senior Ryan Locke was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior KC Weber got a fielder's choice to score McCurry.
Grand Valley came back with a run in the bottom of the first. In the third inning, Christensen and senior Ryan Williams reached on a single and error. Following a sacrifice bunt, Weber reached on a walk. Back-to-back ground balls scored Christensen and Williams.
The Lakers scored in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2. GVSU threatened with two on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Perretta got a fly ball to right field to end the game.
For Tiffin, Christensen had two hits. Perretta (1-2) gave up five hits, two runs, one earned, walked two and struck out one in seven innings.
For Grand Valley State, Mike Nadratowski had two hits. Anthony Campanella (3-2) gave up six hits, three runs, one earned, walked one and struck out one in seven innings.
In the nightcap, Grand Valley State scored one run in the first inning. In the second inning with two outs, the Dragons got singles from sophomore Nick Calandra and senior Colin Sallee. Junior Mario Rodriguez singled to score Calandra.
The Lakers scored twice in the third to lead 3-1. TU used four hits to score five runs in the fifth to go up 6-3. GVSU threatened in the fifth with two on and no outs. Tiffin turned a double play and got a strike out to escape.
In the seventh, the Dragons scored twice to push the lead to five. In the bottom half, Grand Valley State had bases loaded with one out. Blalock whiffed the next two batters to end the game.
For Tiffin, Sallee had three hits and drove in three runs while Calandra had two hits. Blalock (1-2) gave up seven hits, three runs, walked seven and struck out seven in seven innings.
For Grand Valley State, Chris Rudenga had three hits while Stephen Claypool and Kevin Zak had two hits each. Sean Clancy (2-4) gave up eight hits, five runs, all earned and struck out two in four innings.
