TIFFIN, Ohio - Freshman Sarah Brown and senior Amber Young gave up two runs over 16 innings as the Tiffin University softball team (16-22, 10-10 GLIAC) split with Ferris State (20-12, 12-6 GLIAC), Sunday afternoon at Paradiso Fields. TU lost the first 1-0 in nine innings and won the second 7-1.
Game one was a pitching duel with just nine hits and 21 strikeouts between the two squads. In the ninth inning, Ferris State doubled and scored on an error. Tiffin went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth.
For Tiffin, freshman Kristen Prokopakis had two hits. Young (8-5) gave up five hits, one run which was unearned, walked five and struck out 11 in nine innings.
For Ferris State, Michelle Tononi had three hits. Dana Bowler (14-6) gave up four hits, walked two and struck out 10 in nine innings.
In the night cap, the Dragons struck in the fourth inning. With two outs, freshman Kaitlin Gruenewald was at third and junior Emily Shaw at first. Junior Brianna Gamm ripped a double to clear the bases and make it 2-0. TU scored five runs off seven hits in the sixth to seal the game.
For Tiffin, freshman Cassandra Brown and Prokopakis had three hits each while Gamm had two hits and drove in three runs. Brown (5-5) gave up five hits, one run which was unearned, walked one and struck out five in seven innings.
For Ferris State, Emily Carlson (0-2) gave up eight hits, seven runs, three earned, walked two and struck out four in five innings.
