TIFFIN, Ohio - Senior Amber Young threw a five-hit shutout as the Tiffin University softball team (15-21, 9-9 GLIAC) split with #9 Grand Valley State (28-4, 16-2 GLIAC), Saturday afternoon at Paradiso Fields. TU won the first 5-0 and lost the second 4-3.
In game one, Tiffin had junior Emily Shaw at third and junior Caitlin Houk at second with two outs. Sophomore Madison Yanek hit a grounder that was misplayed, allowing Shaw and Houk to score. The Dragons would score three more runs to cap the victory.
For Tiffin, Shaw and freshman Jena King had two hits each. Young (8-4) gave up five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings.
For Grand Valley State, Tonya Calkins had two hits. Hannah Santora (15-1) gave up six hits, five runs, only one earned, walked two and struck out four in six innings.
In the night cap, Grand Valley State scored in the first and third innings. In the fifth inning with freshman Kasie Sepeda on second, freshman Kristin Prokopakis hit a ball in the infield. Two errors on the play allowed Sepeda to score and Prokopakis to reach third. Freshman Cassandra Brown singled to score Prokopakis.
In the sixth inning, Katie Martin hit a solo shot to put the Lakers up 3-2. King walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sepeda singled to left field moving King to third, then scored when the fielder misplayed the ball. In the bottom of the seventh, Miranda Cleary hit a solo shot to end the game.
For Tiffin, Young (8-5) gave up one hit, one run and walked one in one inning.
For Grand Valley State, Martin had two hits and drove in three runs. Sara Andrasik (13-2) gave up three hits, three runs, none earned, walked three and struck out eight in seven innings.
