ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Sophomore Nick Calandra had two hits as the Tiffin University baseball team (4-7) took a tough 6-4 loss to Eckerd (11-10), Tuesday night at Turley Complex.
Eckerd struck first, scoring a run in the third inning. In the fifth inning, Tiffin used a hit and two errors to put three runs up on the board.
In the sixth inning, senior Ryan Williams was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single from senior Jordan Stum. Senior Colin Sallee laced a single down the left field line to score Williams.
The Tritons scored twice in the sixth to make it 4-3. In the eighth inning, Williams and senior Brock Mitchell led off with singles. Stum laid down a sacrifice bunt to move them each a base. EC got two ground outs to end the threat. Eckerd scored three in the bottom of the eighth to get the win.
For Tiffin, Calandra had two hits and drove in two runs. Junior Joe Perretta (0-1) gave up two hits, three runs, one earned, walked one and struck out two in 2.3 innings. Freshman Logan Sendelbach had a strong outing striking out seven batters in 5.7 innings.
For Eckerd, Chris Hanson had two hits. Richard Cruz-Sanchez (3-0) gave up three hits and struck out one batter in two innings.
Tiffin remains in Florida, playing a doubleheader against Upper Iowa, Thursday, March 14. The games are scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m.
