Tiffin Drops Two On Opening Day

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Freshman Garrett Vernau had three hits as the Tiffin University baseball team (0-2) lost 2-0 and 2-1 (10 innings) to Slippery Rock (2-0), Saturday afternoon at VA Memorial Stadium.

Tiffin threatened in the first inning with walks to Vernau and senior KC Weber. Slippery Rock got a double play and a fly out to get out of trouble. The Rock scored in the bottom of the first and added an insurance run in the fourth.

For Tiffin, senior Eric Klepper (0-1) gave up five hits, two runs, one earned, walked two and struck out four in seven innings.

For Slippery Rock, John Shaffer had two hits. Lee Trivino threw a one-hitter with four walks and seven strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Slippery Rock scored in the third for the early lead. In the fifth inning, Vernau led off with a double. Senior Ty Glass singled to move Vernau to third. Senior Ryan Williams drove him home with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1. The Rock would score in the tenth for the win.

For TU, Vernau had three hits while Williams had two. Sophomore Greg Sombati (0-1) gave up four hits, one run, walked one and struck out three in three innings.

For SRU, Jake Weibley had three hits. John Kovalik (1-0) gave up three hits, walked two and struck out five in five innings.

Tiffin remains on the road, Sunday, Feb. 24, playing Slippery Rock in another doubleheader. The games are scheduled to start at noon.
