BAY CITY, Mich. - Senior Pat Curtin shared the GLIAC Player of the Year award as the 2012 All-GLIAC Baseball team was released. He is the second TU player to earn GLIAC Player of the Yera in the last three years, following Devin Rudolph in 2010. A total of six Dragons were selected in all-conference voting.
Curtin earned first team honors at outfield and was second team at starting pitcher. He was joined on the first team by senior Val Helldobler (3B). Joining Curtin on second team was senior Jordan Chiero (1B) and junior Ryan Williams (Outfield). Honorable mention went to senior Jordan Liette (Pitcher) and junior KC Weber (Catcher).
Curtin is the first four-time All-GLIAC selection for TU, earning honorable mention in 2009, second team in 2010 and first team the last two seasons. At the plate, he had four triples, scored 29 runs, drove in 18 runs, stole 11 bases and batted .404. Curtin leads the league in triples and is second in batting average. He also became the third Dragon to have 200 hits in a career.
On the mound, Curtin was 5-1 with two complete games and two saves, struck out 31 batters for a team leading 3.49 ERA in 38.7 innings. He recorded a 5-4 win over Saginaw Valley State on May 6 that clinched a GLIAC tournament bid for the first time in school history.
Helldobler, who was second team in 2009 and honorable mention in 2011, started 43 of the 44 games he played in. He had five doubles and two triples, scored 21 runs, drove in a team-high 29 runs and batted .338. Helldobler became the fourth Dragon to have 200 hits in a career. He already holds the career record for assists and is within striking distance of the records for at-bats and games played.
Chiero, who earned second team honors in 2011, was the only player to have played in all 49 games. He had 10 doubles, scored 29 runs, drove in 27, batted .350 and has not committed an error in 202 chances. Chiero is ranked fourth all-time with 447 putouts.
Williams, who started 36 of 40 games played, had six doubles and two triples, scored 17 runs, drove in 18 runs and hit .321.
Liette was 6-5 with five complete games, struck out 62 batters for a 4.52 ERA in 69.7 innings. He is 10 strikeouts away from the single season record. Liette has thrown complete game wins in each of his last four starts and has 33 strikeouts with just four walks in his last 33.3 innings.
Weber, who has started all 41 games he has played, has four doubles, scored 20 runs, driven in 11 runs and is batting .310. He has thrown out 12 base runners and has a .983 fielding percentage behind the plate.
