Dragons Slide Past Oilers Into Sixth In GLIAC

TIFFIN, Ohio - Senior Pat Curtin threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts and senior Val Helldobler had four hits as the Tiffin University baseball team (18-23, 13-15 GLIAC) swept Findlay (14-27, 7-21 GLIAC) 3-0 and 11-7, Wednesday afternoon at Heminger Field. With the sweep, TU now sits in the sixth and final GLIAC tournament spot with two weeks left.

In game one, in the second inning junior Tyler Glass walked and moved to third when Findlay misplayed a ball hit by freshman Derek Koch. Junior KC Weber singled up the middle to score Glass.

In the third inning, Helldobler tripled down the right field line and went on to score on a wild pitch. Senior Jordan Chiero doubled followed by a walk to junior Ryan Williams. Glass ripped a single to left field to score Chiero.

In the seventh inning, the Oilers threatened as Tommy Roush singled and Victor Migliore walked. That put two on with one out. Curtin got UF to hit a fielder's choice and a pop up to end the game.

For Tiffin, Helldobler went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Curtin (4-1) gave up three hits, walked one and struck out six to extend his scoreless streak to 14 and 1/3rd innings.

For Findlay, Aaron Geis (2-3) gave up five hits, three runs, two earned, walked five and struck out six in six innings.

In the nightcap, Findlay struck first. Following a fielder's choice, Roush launched a bomb over the right field fence to make it 2-0. Tiffin scored a run in the first and second while the Oilers scored twice in the second. That made it 4-2, UF after two.

In the third inning, Findlay turned a double play right off the bat. Williams walked and scored on a double to right center field by Tyler Glass. With Glass going, Koch ripped a single through the right side, scoring Glass easily.

Koch stole second and moved to third on an error by a ball hit by Weber. Calandra dropped in a single to score Koch. That made it 5-4, Dragons. Findlay took the lead back by scoring twice in the fifth inning.

In the bottom half, TU used a hit, two errors and two hit by pitches to score three runs. The Oilers kept things interesting with a run in the sixth to make it 8-7. Tiffin scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the deal.

For Tiffin, Curtin and Helldobler had two hits and drove in two runs each while Tyler Glass had two hits and scored four runs. Helldobler is now two hits shy of being the fourth TU player to have 200 career hits. Senior Jordan Liette (4-5) gave up 11 hits, seven runs, five of them earned, walked one and struck out eight in seven innings.

For Findlay, Roush was 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in two runs while Garrett Busch had two hits and scored twice. Freshman Mike Steele (0-1) gave up two runs, neither earned and walked one.
