TIFFIN, Ohio - Senior Chris Pistorio threw a one-hitter as the Tiffin University baseball team (16-23, 11-15 GLIAC) split with Hillsdale (10-30, 8-20 GLIAC), Sunday afternoon at Heminger Field. TU won the opener 5-0 while HC bounced back to win the night cap 4-3.
In game one, in the first inning with one out, junior Kyle Robinson singled and stole a base. Senior Val Helldobler laced a double to left field to score Robinson. Senior Jordan Chiero doubled down the left field line to push Helldobler across the plate.
In the bottom of the sixth, Chiero singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Junior Tyler Glass tripled to right field to score Chiero. Junior Ryan Locke then ripped a triple down the right field line to score Glass. Locke would score on an error.
For Tiffin, Chiero, Helldobler and junior Kyle Robinson had two hits each. Pistorio (2-3) gave up one hit, walked two and struck out four in seven innings.
For Hillsdale, Mike Blanchard had the lone hit. Colin Gerish (1-4) gave up nine hits, five runs, four of them earned and struck out three in six innings.
In the night cap, Tiffin struck first in the third inning as freshman Nick Calandra and Robinson drew walks. Senior Pat Curtin crushed a triple to right field to score Calandra and Robinson.
Hillsdale would score one in the fourth. In the fifth inning, the Chargers took advantage of three hits and two errors to score twice. HC would score in the seventh for a 4-2 lead.
In the seventh, Curtin walked and stole second. Chiero reached on an error with Curtin moving to third. Freshman Derek Koch went in to run for Chiero. Junior Ryan Williams singled to left field to score Curtin and move Koch to second. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners each a base. Hillsdale got two ground outs to get the win.
For Tiffin, Curtin drove in two runs. Junior Brett Faber (0-4) gave up six hits, three runs, none of them earned and struck out three in five innings.
For Hillsdale, Chris Stephens had two hits. Matthew Reck (2-2) gave up three hits, two runs, both earned, walked seven and struck out three in 4.1 innings. Kris Morris (6) pitched the seventh to pick up the save.
