Tiffin Plucks Two From Ashland

TIFFIN, Ohio - Freshman Derek Koch had four hits and senior Val Helldobler recorded his 400th career assist as the Tiffin University baseball team (13-22, 8-14 GLIAC) swept a doubleheader from Ashland (22-14, 14-8 GLIAC) 1-0 and 10-4, Wednesday afternoon at Heminger Field.

In game one, Ashland loaded the bases in the first inning on a single and two walks. Ethan Houck was hit by a pitch which pushed across a run. In the bottom of the first, junior Ryan Locke was hit by a pitch. Senior Jordan Chiero ripped a double down the right field line to score Locke.

In the eighth inning, Koch doubled to right field and was out at third on a fielder's choice by junior KC Weber. Following a fly out, junior Kyle Robinson singled through the left side moving Weber to second. Helldobler ripped a double to right field to score Weber ending the game.

For Tiffin, Robinson had two hits to lead the attack. Helldobler recorded his 400th career assists in the fifth inning, the first Dragon to hit that mark. Senior Pat Curtin (3-1) gave up two hits, one run which was earned, walked three and struck out four in eight innings.

For Ashland, Zach Thompson was 2-for-3 and scored a run. Brad Thomas (6-1) gave up five hits, two runs, both earned and struck out two batters in 7.2 innings.

In the night cap, the Eagles struck first getting a run in the third. In the bottom half of the third, the Dragons exploded scoring eight runs on seven hits. Curtin and Robinson both had triples, the latter with the bases loaded.

Ashland scored three runs over the next two innings to make it 8-4. TU scored twice in the sixth inning to seal the deal.

For Tiffin, Koch had three hits while Curtin, Chiero and junior Tyler Glass had two hits each. Sophomore Connor Wendt (1-0) gave up one hit and struck out one in one inning of work.

For Ashland, Tyler Gray, Wade Kaido and Adam Urbania had two hits apiece. Aaron Hilt (6-4) gave up eight hits, eight runs, all earned, walked one and struck out one in 2.2 innings.

Tiffin remains home, Saturday-Sunday, April 21-22 for a pair of doubleheaders against Hillsdale. The 21st has a 1:00 p.m. start while the 22nd is scheduled to start at noon.
