ALLENDALE, Mich. - Junior Ryan Williams had four hits as the Tiffin University baseball team (11-22, 6-14 GLIAC) dropped a doubleheader to #20 Grand Valley State (26-10, 16-6 GLIAC) 11-4, 12-6, Sunday afternoon at Laker Baseball Field.
In game one, in the second inning, senior Jordan Chiero walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Junior Tayler Glass singled through the right side to score Chiero. Grand Valley State came back with seven runs to take a 7-1 lead after four innings.
In the fifth inning, an error and two singles loaded the bases for the Dragons. Chiero walked to push Williams across the plate. A ground out and a single from Glass scored junior Pat Robinson and senior Pat Curtin. GVSU scored four in the sixth inning to seal the deal.
For Tiffin, Glass was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Junior Eric Klepper (2-3) gave up seven hits; seven run, all earned and walked two in three innings.
For Grand Valley, Jared Cowan had three hits while Derik Strzalkowski had a grand slam home run. Cory Baker (3-1) gave up eight hits, four runs, one earned, walked two and struck out three in 4.2 innings.
In the night cap, the Lakers scored five in the first inning and led 6-1 heading into the fifth. Curtin and junior Tyler Glass led off with singles. Following a strikeout, Curtin moved to third on a wild pitch. Chiero singled to right field to score Curtin.
A fielder's choice had Tyler Glass at third and Williams at first. Freshman Nick Calandra was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Grand Valley fielded a grounder hit by junior KC Weber. The resulting throw sailed down the right field line clearing the bases. The Lakers once again had a big sixth inning to shut the door.
For Tiffin, Williams had three hits while Curtin, Chiero, Tyler Glass, junior Jordan Stum and Weber had two hits each. Senior Jordan Liette (2-5) gave up 12 hits, 10 runs, nine of them earned and struck out five in 5.1 innings.
For Grand Valley, Brian Robinson had three hits while Cowan had two hits, scored two runs and drove in three runs. Anthony Campanella (5-1) gave up eight hits, five runs, two of them earned, walked one and struck out four in five innings.
Tiffin begins an eight game home stand, Wednesday, April 18 against Ashland. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
