TIFFIN, Ohio - Senior Pat Curtin went 6-for-7 as the Tiffin University baseball team (8-15, 3-7 GLIAC) dropped a doubleheader to Wayne State (15-7, 7-3 GLIAC) 4-3 and 9-5, Sunday afternoon at Heminger Field.
In game one, the score was 1-1 after four innings. Wayne State scored twice over the next two innings. That gave the Warriors a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Curtin tagged a triple to left center field. Senior Jordan Chiero bounced a double off the right field fence to score Curtin. Following a sacrifice bunt that moved Chiero to third, senior Cory Osborne came in to pinch hit.
Osborne lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Chiero to make it 3-3. In the top of the seventh, Brad Guenther led off with a triple and scored on a single by Andrew Ciennik. The Dragons threatened in the bottom half, as junior Ryan Williams tripled to left field. WSU got a nice defensive play on a line out and a strike out to get the win.
For Tiffin, Curtin led the attack with three hits, two of them going for extra bases. Senior Chris Pistorio (1-2) gave up four hits, one run and struck out two in one inning. Junior Eric Klepper had a solid outing, giving up 10 hits, three runs and striking out eight in six innings.
For Wayne State, Ciennik was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. Ethan Vasiliauskas (5-0) gave up six hits, three runs, two earned and struck out three in six innings. Billy Hurley (6) gave up one hit with a walk and a strikeout in one inning.
In the nightcap, the score was the same after four innings, 1-1. Wayne State used three walks, two hits and an error to put four runs on the scoreboard in the fifth.
In the bottom half of the inning, Williams walked and moved to third when junior Kyle Robinson's grounder was thrown away. Junior Roger Christensen singled through the left side to score Williams and move Robinson to second. Curtin dropped in a single to plate Robinson.
The Warriors tagged TU for four runs in the seventh. At 9-3, it appeared the game was over. With two outs, Tiffin put on the rally caps. Curtin doubled down the right field line and moved to third when the Warriors booted a grounder hit by Chiero.
Senior Val Helldobler ripped a single up the middle to score Curtin and move Chiero to second. Osborne delivered another clutch pinch at-bat, this time a double down the left field line to score Chiero and move Helldobler to third. WSU got a fly out to end the game.
For Tiffin, Curtin had three hits and drove in two runs while Christensen had two hits. Senior Jordan Liette (2-3) gave up five hits, five runs, three of them earned, walked three and struck out four in 4.1 innings.
For Wayne State, Guenther had two hits and scored three runs while Kasey Koster and Kyle Vesey had two hits each. Greg Spiess (1-0) gave up eight hits, five runs, two of them earned, walked one and struck out two in 6.2 innings.
