TIFFIN, Ohio - Senior Val Helldobler, junior Kyle Robinson and junior Ryan Williams had three hits each as the Tiffin University baseball team (8-13, 3-5 GLIAC) split with Wayne State (13-7, 5-3 GLIAC), Saturday afternoon at Heminger Field. The Dragons won the opener 7-6 while the Warriors bounced back to win the night cap 2-0.
In game one, the first three innings saw cautious play from both squads. Heading into the fourth, the score was 1-1. Wayne State used two errors and three hits to score three runs. In the bottom of the fourth, Tiffin tallied four runs off four hits and three errors to lead 5-4.
In the fifth inning, Kyle Zimmerman led off with a single. Kasey Koster crushed the ball over the right field fence to make it 6-5, Warriors.
In the bottom half, juniors Ryan Locke and Ty Glass walked and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt. Williams walloped a double to right center field to clear the bases making it 7-6 TU. In the seventh inning, following a deep fly out, senior Pat Curtin came in from centerfield to pitch. He got a strikeout and a ground out for the win.
For Tiffin, Helldobler had three hits while Robinson and Williams had two hits and drove in two runs each. Freshman Greg Sombati (1-0) gave up four hits, two runs, both earned and struck out two in three innings. Curtin picked up his first save of the season.
For Wayne State, Koster was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs while Justin DeFrancis and Zimmerman had two hits and scored two runs each. Alex Pierse (2-1) gave up seven hits, seven runs, four earned, walked four and struck out two in four innings.
In the nightcap, Tiffin got great catches from Robinson and Williams to turn back scoring opportunities. In the seventh, WSU used four hits to push two runs across and shut down the Dragons in the bottom half for the win.
For Tiffin, junior Roger Christensen, Robinson and Williams had one hit each. Junior Brent Faber (0-2) gave up five hits, two runs, both earned, walked one and struck out three in 6.1 innings.
For Wayne State, seven players had one hit each. Jeff Wedesky (3-1) threw a three-hit complete game shutout with three walks and three strikeouts.
Tiffin closes the series with Wayne State, Sunday, April 1 with a doubleheader. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon.
