Tiffin University (10-9, 1-1 GLIAC) opened their big six-game GLIAC home stand weekend with a split with Grand Valley State (18-4), winning game one 2-1 before falling 4-1 in the nightcap.
Amber Young was outstanding in the opener, going 7 innings and allowing just 4 hits and one unearned run with 7 strikeouts over 108 pitches. She improves to 4-5 with the win.
After GVSU opened with their unearned run in the top of the first inning, the Dragons responded. Caitlin Houk accounted for all of TU's hits in the game, collecting two in the opener and driving in a run to tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
In the fifth inning, the Dragons scored an unearned run of their own, as Patrece Gibson raced home from second base after an errant throw down the first base line on a bunt by Torrie Terry. Young then pitched out of trouble in the seventh inning to secure the win.
In game two, Abbey Cooksey took the loss, going 3.1 innings and allowing 4 earned runs. Torrie Terry finished the final 2.2 innings.
The Lakers got two runs in the third inning and two in the fourth to chase Cooksey. The Dragons also could do nothing against Lakers' starter Hannah Santora, as they managed just one hit and scored one unearned run.
