CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The Tiffin University baseball team (5-8) gave up just three hits as they defeated Cedarville (11-4) 4-0, Wednesday afternoon at Yellowjacket Field.
In the third inning, Tiffin used two hits and a Cedarville miscue to score a run. In the fourth inning, Paul Hembekides doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Junior Cody Dunn got a pop up and a strikeout to end the threat.
The Yellowjackets threatened again in the eighth, loading the bases with three walks. Senior Jordan Liette got a strike out and a fielder's choice to get out of the inning.
In the ninth, junior Roger Christensen and senior Pat Curtin led off with singles for the Dragons. Following a sacrifice bunt, senior Val Helldobler singled to score Christensen and move Curtin to third. Junior Tyler Glass was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Junior Tayler Glass grounded the ball to the pitcher. The throw home by the pitcher forced out Curtin. CU attempted to throw out Helldobler, however the throw sailed down the left field line. When the dust cleared, Helldobler had scored and the Glass twins were at second and third.
Junior KC Weber drew a walk and single from freshman Derek Koch made it 4-0. In the bottom of the ninth, the Yellowjackets led off with a single. Freshman Greg Sombati got Dan Petke to ground into a double play and forced Derek Ogle to ground out to end the game.
For Tiffin, Helldobler went 3-for-3 while Christensen and Koch had two hits each. Dunn (1-0) gave up one hit, walked three and struck out three in three innings.
For Cedarville, Hembekides had two hits. Steve Cardwell (0-3) gave up seven hits, three runs, two of them earned, walked one and struck out six in eight innings.
Tiffin opens the conference season on the road, Saturday-Sunday, March 24-25, taking on Ohio Dominican.
