UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - All five starters scored in double figures as the Tiffin University men's basketball team (9-11, 4-9 GLIAC) knocked off Saginaw Valley State (9-8, 5-5 GLIAC) 84-77, Thursday night.
Tiffin came out controlling the tempo early. The Dragons took a 23-10 lead following a layup by senior Karl Finley with 10:15 to go. Saginaw Valley State came back with a 12-2 run. A 3-pointer by Greg Foster made it 25-22, TU at the 7:57 mark.
Tiffin regained composure, pushing the lead to 10, 34-24 with 5:24 left. The Cardinals responded as well with an 8-1 burst. George Goodman nailed a trey to cut it to three, 35-32 at the 4:03 mark. The Dragons closed the half with a 13-2 run to lead 48-34.
In the second half, TU looked to have things in hand with a 71-58 lead with 5:40 to go in the game. SVSU was determined not to go down without a fight. A triple from Chris Webb ended a 19-10 run to make it 81-77 with 29 seconds to go. Senior Travis Spahr hit three free throws to seal the win.
For Tiffin, Finley had 20 points, freshman Iman Johnson scored 18 points with two steals and blocked three shots while senior Keenan Barlow had 16 points with four triples. Sophomore Joe Graessle had 13 points and Spahr had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
For Saginaw Valley State, Goodman had 23 points and was 7-of-11 from behind the arc, Chris Webb had 20 points and Foster had 17 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.
