For the second game in a row, Tiffin University's women's basketball team played in an overtime thriller.
This time, the results came up a little short.
The Dragons (11-4, 6-3 GLIAC) took on first-place Ashland (13-1, 7-0) at home in a major GLIAC South Division showdown and, for a time, the Dragons looked like they were going to pick up the key victory.
But the Eagles came back from a 13-point second half deficit to post a 77-75 overtime win, frustrating the Dragons in a hard-fought contest.
TU held the Eagles to just 39 percent shooting in the first half while hitting at 48 percent from the floor to hold a solid 38-30 halftime lead.
But Ashland improved to 46 percent in the second half as the Dragons went cold, hitting just 37 percent. Even with the cold spell, TU managed to hold the lead all the way until the 3:54 mark of the second half.
Momentum then seemed to swing Ashland's way, as they twice led by 3 points inside the final 2:00. But Karli Mast drilled a game-tying three pointer with 19 seconds left to tie the score at 69-69.
After Ashland's Ashley Dorner missed a jumper with 5 seconds left, TU had a last chance in regulation but Jennifer Johnston's trey attempt failed to go in at the buzzer.
In the overtime, TU started strong, taking a four-point lead with 2:23 to play. After Johnston's layup with 55 seconds remaining gave TU a 75-74 lead, Kari Daugherty hit a bucket to give AU the 76-75 lead with 38 ticks remaining.
A TU foul gave Jena Stutzman two free throw attempts, but she only made the first and TU grabbed the rebound. TU again had a chance at the buzzer to get the victory, but Mandy Jaeb's three point attempt banked off the iron as the Eagles escaped with the victory.
Jaeb led TU with 20 points, while Mast had 17. Jessica Harris totaled 10 points with 10 rebounds and 5 assists, while Holly Focke also had 6 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists.
