Tiffin University's baseball team dropped its final two games of the 2011 season, falling at Saginaw Valley State 4-3 and 5-3. The Dragons finish the season with a 13-35 overall record, 10-24 in the GLIAC.
Tiffin got a solid performance from starting pitcher Cory Hornyak right up until the seventh inning, when everything seemed to go wrong. With TU up 3-1 and needing just two more outs, the Dragons allowed 3 unearned runs on 4 errors, 3 walks, and a wild pitch without recording another out. The Cardinals got the win on a bases loaded walk to end the game.
Hornyak took the loss despite allowing just one earned run, fanning 9 while also walking 5. TU had 4 errors, all in the final inning, erasing what had been a 3-0 TU lead in the fourth inning.
Pat Curtin led the way with 2 hits while Jordan Chiero also drilled a two-run home run.
In the nightcap, Tony Naso took the loss, allowing 5 earned runs over 4 innings. The Cardinals scored 2 in the first and 3 more in the fourth to knock out Naso.
Curtin again had 2 hits while Conor Wendt and Val Helldobler also added 2 hits, as the Dragons got the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning with two outs but could not connect as the final out was recorded at second base on a fielder's choice.
