Dragons drop two close games at Lake Erie

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 $website.include("options")

Tiffin University battled back in game one at Lake Erie, overcoming a 3-0 deficit to tie it in the final inning, but fell in the bottom of the 7th 4-3. The Dragons also struggled early, falling behind 6-1 after two innings en route to an eventual 6-2 loss in the doubleheader sweep by the Storm.

TU (8-19, 5-8 GLIAC) got a solid outing by Pat Curtin in the opener, as he went 6 innings and allowed 3 earned runs on 7 hits in the no-decision.

TU trailed 3-0 after three innings, but chipped away at the lead with single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh. Michael Dushane and Val Helldobler picked up RBIs in the game, with Zach McCutcheon's two-out single followed by a throwing error tying the game as Dushane came home.

In the bottom of the 7th, Tony Naso came on to pitch in relief of Curtin. A hit batter and a sacrifice later, the Storm were set up with a runner in scoring position and just one out. Lake Erie responded with a double to end the game as Naso took the loss after one-third of an inning of work.

In the nightcap, the Storm led 6-1 after two innings as they jumped on Conor Wendt. Wendt lasted just 1.1 innings and allowed all 6 earned runs. TU's relievers, however, proved very effective, as Kyle Klinker, Brock Mitchell, Kyle Pilbeam, and Chris Sauber combined to shut down the Storm over the remaining 5.2 innings.

TU, however, could only manage 8 singles in the game and didn't score after the third inning. Dushane had 2 hits, as did Colin Lowe along with an RBI.

The Dragons, who also managed 9 singles in game one, had no extra-base hits in the twinbill.

TU now takes on the Storm in two more games Sunday at 12 pm.
