The red-hot Dragons seem to just be getting hotter as the season wears on.
Tiffin University, ranked 32nd in the nation and 3rd in the Midwest Region, blasted past Wayne State 13-0 in the opener of four games in Detroit this weekend, but the story wasn't the Dragons' bats. It was the combined pitching effort of Amber Young and Abbey Cooksey, who combined for a no-hitter in the five inning shutout.
Young, who started the game, pitched the first two innings before Cooksey came in to toss the final three frames. Each pitcher allowed just one walk apiece. The closest Wayne State came to scoring was in the fifth inning when Cooksey allowed a walk. A passed ball moved the runner to second but Cooksey retired the final two hitters to end the game.
Run support was never an issue, as TU racked up 11 hits and tallied 7 runs in the third inning to blow the game open.
Tiffany Smith had a double and home run for 5 RBIs to lead the assault while Jessie Creakbaum also stroked a double for 2 RBIs. Amanda Temple also had 2 hits.
In the nightcap, Mindy Meredith was strong on the mound once again, fanning 10 and allowing just 4 hits in a 5-1 decision. Meredith also walked none in improving to 9-1 on the season.
TU (22-7, 13-1 GLIAC) again got mammoth clutch hits from Smith, who blasted a grand slam for her 9th RBI of the day to put TU up 5-0. Stephanie Bobotas had 3 hits while Lauren Mazzuca and Temple added 2 more hits apiece.
